Tesla HMI Redesign
A redesign with what people actually want, by simplifying complex vehicle interactions while embracing Tesla’s innovative and futuristic brand identity.
Project background
Tesla is known for its minimalist and futuristic vehicle interiors. However, user feedback highlighted that some features were buried in submenus, and customization options were limited. The goal of this project was to redesign Tesla’s HMI to enhance personalization, simplify navigation, and improve overall usability.
Design Concept
The redesign introduced quick-access controls for frequently used features, and enhanced the user experience with what the users need. This concept aimed to make the interface more adaptive to individual driver preferences while maintaining Tesla’s clean and futuristic design language.
Softwares Used
- Figma
- Adobe Photoshop
- DaVinci Resolve
- iMovie
Process
The Double Diamond Design Process guided the workflow:
1. Discover
- Conducted surveys with Tesla users to identify common frustrations.
- Reviewed Tesla forums and feedback for feature improvement ideas.
2. Define
- Identified pain points: deep menu hierarchies, lack of dashboard customization, and limited accessibility options.
3. Develop
- Designed wireframes with quick-access tiles and simpler user experience.
- Iterated based on feedback from early usability tests with Tesla owners.
4. Deliver
- Delivered high-fidelity mockups and a clickable prototype and modular customization.
Research
- Analyzed Tesla’s current UI system for bottlenecks.
- Compared features with competitors like Rivian and Lucid.
- Conducted workshops with Tesla users to co-design new features.
Design Goals
- Simplify navigation by reducing submenu levels.
- Introduce quick shortcuts to the dashboards tailored to individual needs.
- Incorporate advanced gesture controls for minimal physical interaction.
